Gunmen storm bar near Burundi capital, kill 36

Gunmen from neighboring Congo killed 36 people in a late-night attack at a pub in Burundi, an official from the central African nation said Monday.

Bujumbura province governor Jacques Minami said that the attackers descended on the pub west of Burundi's capital Sunday night.

He said the attackers had crossed the river from Congo.
Survivor Jackson Kabura, who was wounded in the stomach, said the men entered wearing fatigues: "One of them said, 'Kill them all, kill them all. Make sure there's no survivors.'"

President Pierre Nkurunziza has declared three days of mourning. Burundi suffered a 16-year civil war that only ended in 2009 when its remaining rebel groups demobilized.

"The persons who were brutally assassinated were our brothers and sisters," Nkurunziza said.
"I promise that those criminals will be arrested and brought to justice," he told a crowd in the town of Gatumba, the scene of the attack, outside the capital Bujumbura.
